I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing...
I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing because I did not believe that was possible, but I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, to be informed on the subject, and soon realized I had found the truth. Life was certainly not worth living before learning of this truth. Discouragement, despondency, and headaches comprised the greater part of my life, and there was little room for happiness. I was seldom free from headaches, although having glasses fitted quite regularly with very little relief, and I was getting into the habit of using headache powders and pills almost continually. I could not think clearly; but I then believed I thought with the gray matter in my head. I have learned in Christian Science that there is one Mind, God, and man is His reflection, and that matter called brain has no more intelligence than matter in any other form. I had given up hope of ever understanding the Bible and came to regard church as a place to go when one felt good; but often I could not go because I was too sick. Now I go when I feel sick, and very often find healing there—always if I am receptive to the healing truth. I seldom feel sick now, however, as Christian Science is a wonderful preventive.
A few weeks after reading Science and Health I was able to take off glasses, which I had worn for almost ten years, and have never had them on since, which has been about six and one-half years. Headaches became less frequent and the craving for strong pills disappeared. These are all cause for gratitude, but are insignificant compared to the changed thought and outlook upon life. Resentment finds no place when one realizes that God's ideas dwell in perfect harmony and cannot give or take offense.
On page 588 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy gives the following definition of hell: "Mortal belief; error; lust; remorse; hatred; revenge; sin; sickness; death; suffering and self-destruction; self-imposed agony; effects of sin; that which 'worketh abomination or maketh a lie;' " while heaven she defines thus (p. 587): "Harmony; the reign of Spirit; government by divine Principle; spirituality; bliss; the atmosphere of Soul." They are not places for future habitation, but present states of consciousness. When I read Mrs. Eddy's explanation of God, and man's relation to God, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for this reasonable, and the only logical, explanation I had ever heard. I am also very grateful for the privilege of class instruction, as it has helped me to realize more clearly the fundamental truths of Christian Science.
