Correct Reasoning

THE question, "How do you know that there is a God?" was put to the writer when she was still a member of a denominational church. She knew these lines from the Bible, "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear," but she could not give a proof of her belief to the doubting one. The minister of the church was asked to hold private classes where all perplexing questions could be studied and answered, but each time his answer was evasive.

A prayer for understanding and guidance was offered to God. Then she recalled having been given a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. It was sought, found, and eagerly read. She knew that she had indeed found the "Key to the Scriptures," and she was content to wait for the unfolding of the answer to her question.

It was soon seen that because the material senses were illusory, God's presence could never be perceived in that way. She saw, just as Elijah had seen, that His presence was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire. His presence was indicated by "a still small voice." Nothing could destroy the true consciousness, of which man is always aware, and even if a man wished to deny this fact he would have to be conscious in order to make the denial. The proof that God exists, Christian Science shows to be as fixed as the knowing that the rules of mathematics exist.
