I am glad to be able to send the following testimony in gratitude for the saving and healing power of Christian Science. In December last, I became very ill with ptomaine poisoning. For some days I endeavored to overcome the illness with what little I knew of Science, but as I did not improve asked help from a practitioner. My people are not Scientists and were very urgent in their desire to call in the doctor. On the sixth day of my illness I had a complete collapse and my husband at once called the doctor. I was ordered to bed and put on a very strict diet of white of egg and unsweetened water arrowroot; even milk was forbidden. The practitioner on hearing that I was being medically attended told me she could not continue the Christian Science treatment as well, and though I had no faith in the doctor's treatment and told my husband it would do me no good,—I felt constrained to obey his wishes. The diet was very nauseating to me in my sick condition and I gradually got weaker until I at last seemed conscious only of pain and exhaustion, and the condition became more alarming. After the Christian Science treatment had been given up I felt "as one having no hope," but "man's extremity is God's opportunity," and He had not deserted me. When apparently sinking, a murmured request for the practitioner to be called was heard by my youngest son who, without consulting any one, at once set off for her home. On hearing that his mother was very ill and wanted her the practitioner was soon at my bedside. I can only liken her visit to a lull in a storm,—the still, small voice of Christian Science was heard above the tumult, and the waves of error were stilled. Fear was cast out; one by one the painful symptoms subsided, and finally disappeared. I was told I might eat anything, and the milk I had been especially forbidden was freely taken. The wonderful part of this healing to me was the way in which every obstacle was surmounted; at one blow my fetters had all been struck off. Far from being annoyed at the practitioner being called, my husband was only too delighted to see me recovered. He and my two sons were very much impressed by the immediate change wrought in me by Christian Science.
I have also had other healings in Christian Science—a violent spasmodic cough was healed during Sunday morning service, also during a succession of heavy thunderstorms I was healed of a lifelong fear of them which had often caused me to become quite prostrate with terror. I am indeed grateful for these healings, and though I have much error to overcome, yet I have never known Christian Science to fail when I turned to God with my whole heart. I am grateful to the practitioners who are so kind and patient and helpful, and to the many friends I have met since first attending the Christian Science services.
