In March, 1918, I suffered from a severe form of rheumatism in the lower joints and back. I was aware that just at that time my thoughts were often clouded, due to the strain of visible, material conditions, but this only spurred me on to greater zeal again to see the light through the reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and through right thought. Even then, however, the pain did not cease. The limbs, and back especially, became stiffer from day to day, thus hindering me from moving freely. While in this distress I called on a Christian Science practitioner in Hamburg for help, as I had done several years previously, with wonderful results.

This occurred on a Friday. On the following Saturday evening, while sitting in the armchair, I suddenly experienced a sensation of freedom, arose from the chair and discovered that the pain had left and that I could move freely. In an instant it became clear to me that through the help of Christian Science the difficulties, which had seemingly separated me from divine Truth and Love, had been overcome. Slight attacks of the pain recurred occasionally, but the unreality of this disease was soon completely realized.
