I first heard of Christian Science in 1908, when I read...
I first heard of Christian Science in 1908, when I read the Herold while at the home of some relatives. I immediately became very much interested in this teaching and purchased a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which at that time was published in English only, and also subscribed for the Herold. As we were living in the country, where there were no Christian Scientists, I was deprived of the privilege of attending the services and meetings. At times I longed to converse with other Scientist, but as this was impossible I studied the textbook and the Herolds with greater zeal. The more I read this book the clearer it became to me that in this study was to be found the religion for which I had longed. I was so happy to learn that God is omnipresent, instead of having to search for Him, as previously, in a far-off heaven; thankful to know Him as divine Love, to see Him as an ever present help in times of need, and to know that mental and physical inharmonies may be banished.
One day I sprained my foot, causing a large swelling and severe suffering. I immediately declared the truth, that God is our Life, the only power; and I realized God's omnipresence so clearly that the pain diminished, to my great joy. This took place in the evening. I slept well, and the next morning the foot had resumed its normal condition, for which I am very thankful to God. A similar proof was experienced later. I awoke one morning with headache, dizziness, and backache. Formerly I would have remained in bed, resorting to material means; this time, however, I arose, took our textbook, and studied the truth, realizing that in God's dominion there is no pain, sickness, or any other trouble, and that therefore this seeming evil had no power. Toward evening I felt better and the next day was perfectly well.
For these and other proofs of God's omnipotence and help I am very grateful. I thank God from the bottom of my heart that I was enabled to find Christian Science, for I cannot imagine what life would be now without it. I am also deeply grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her sincere, sacrificing work, through which we have found the new way of Truth. My greatest desire is to grow constantly in spiritual understanding and to demonstrate this in my daily life.
