Jesus' command, "Freely ye have received, freely give,"...

Jesus' command, "Freely ye have received, freely give," has many times come to my thought when the demand of Truth has presented itself to acknowledge through the periodicals the great blessings received from Christian Science. I have often excused myself for not giving my written testimony because I frequently express my gratitude at the Wednesday evening meetings. This, however, does not relieve me from my share of responsibility in testifying to all the world through the avenue of our periodicals.

My mother was an earnest student of Christian Science for several years previous to my study of it, for I did not read a word of the literature or feel any inclination to test it for healing until early one fall, after an acute attack of appendicitis. For several days I had been confined to my bed and unable to eat anything. Finally I arose, dressed, and thoroughly tired of it all, decided to prepare the dinner. While almost fainting from the effort to work, I thought for the first time of trying Christian Science. Without delay I telephoned to a practitioner and in less than five minutes was free from all suffering and weakness. My healing was instantaneous and permanent. In the evening I asked my mother for her copy of "Science and Health and Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy and humbly read the chapter on Prayer. Oh the joy and inspiration of that hour! I experienced, in the words of a hymn, "the solemn hush of being, newly born," for the spiritual idea had dawned upon my thought. Love for the Leader of the Christian Science movement replaced the former antagonism, and a real desire to know and serve God was awakened.

During the seven years following my first healing, many difficulties have arisen, but the understanding of God as revealed through Christian Science has always been available to overcome them. This was recently proved in the following experience. Late one afternoon my little son was struck by a swift baseball, crushing in the left cheek bone and leaving a deep dent. Although he screamed with pain I clung "steadfastly to God and His idea" (Science and Health, p. 495). In half an hour the pain stopped and the child slept, though not quietly. At nine in the evening I put him to bed but could not bear to leave him. I would go downstairs and then on hearing his moans would return to him. The third time I quietly but firmly told him that I had treated him long enough and asked him how much truth he had declared. He stopped moaning and answered, "Not very much." I then told him I was going downstairs to stay and that he was to repeat the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) until he went to sleep. That was the last sound I heard until morning, when his first request was to dress and go down town with his father to buy the best baseball he could find, according to my promise after the accident. This he did and played baseball the entire day. He could eat no solid food until that evening and it took about four days for the discoloration to disappear, but there was no dent left and the contour of his face is perfect.
