Forest City (Iowa) Summit
A recent critic surely knows that it is neither courteous nor Christlike to speak disrespectfully of one whose life work was given to bless mankind. In this day it can only bring discredit upon the one who does it. In the case of Mrs. Eddy, many thousands of people of all faiths have proved and are daily proving the value of the message she gave to a waiting world,—a message of joy and peace to suffering hearts, of surcease from sorrow and discord of every kind, and of healing for both sickness and sin. And this message was Christian Science.
It is a mistake to say that "you can have Christian Science without Mary Baker Eddy." One cannot truly receive a message without honoring the messenger. One cannot drink of the water and ignore the fountain. "You don't have Christianity without Jesus," and you don't have Christian Science without its Discoverer and Founder, Mrs. Eddy, who has restored to us "primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Church Manual, p. 17), the religion of Jesus in its entirety. Worship belongs to God alone, but to fail to show just recognition and genuine gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for her faithfulness in demonstrating for us that God is as good as He was in the days of Jesus, would be to fail to understand the nature and law of divine Love.
Christianity is void without Jesus. On page 25 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says, "The divinity of the Christ was made manifest in the humanity of Jesus." If this humanity were understood and practiced, there would be no disrespect shown to those who seek only to bless mankind; there would be no criticism, but instead all would obey Jesus' command "that he who loveth God love his brother also.
