Newcastle-on-Tyne (England) Chronicle

In an article entitled "Talks on Health," under the heading "A Worrying Disposition," the writer, in coupling Christian Science with will power, suggestion, and mesmierism, shows a lack of understanding as to what Christian Science really is. One only requires a very slight acquaintance with its teaching to discover that it is the very opposite of all of these things.

The human mind, or what the Bible calls the carnal mind, is completely discredited in the New Testament and in Christian Science. The whole of Christian Science practice is based upon an understanding of the power and presence of God as the one infinite divine Mind; and the method of applying this understanding is to yield the human mind, not to the control of another human mind, but to the divine will, as Jesus did when he said, "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do," and again, "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works."

Freedom from fear, worry, and all other ills will never be accomplished through such advice as "Cure yourself," given by the writer of the article in question, but by building upon a surer foundation than human will power; namely, the acceptance of the advice of the apostle Paul to the church at Philippi, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." Mrs. Eddy puts the matter clearly when she says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 446), "The exercise of will brings on a hypnotic state, detrimental to health and integrity of thought."
