The Demands of Truth

How much sweeter our journey heavenward, and how much more joyous our progress, both for ourselves and for those around us, when we but realize the truth of the statement found in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 182), "The demands of God appeal to thought only." How simple this makes our growth, which is steady and sure just so long as we hold the demand for righteous thinking above every other consideration. Many times, however, mortal mind would make us believe that we can only meet the demands of Truth when some one else acts in a way outlined, and we conclude that what really is the beam in our own eye is the result of the mote in the eye of some other person. Of course we construct the beam (false sense) through wrong thinking, but it seems to comfort us to feel that it came through the actions of others instead of our own wrong thoughts. Error argues subtly that it is some person who is delaying our progress in Christian Science, or that a certain environment is holding us back; and too often we despondently admit this to be true, forgetting the truth expressed in the words of a familiar hymn,—

In atmosphere of love divine,
We live, and move, and breathe.
