Fort Collins (Colo.) Courier
It is a far cry from telling of missionary work in foreign lands to a vicious attack on Mrs. Eddy and the religion she founded, and Fort Collins people who were inveigled into attending a talk against Christian Science under the pretext of hearing of missionary activity must have felt sadly misled.
One who accepts certain creeds or rituals as Christian standards might easily miss the spiritual meaning and message of Christian Science, but it must be remembered that, judging by the preaching and practice of Jesus, Christianity is not a creed to be believed nor a ritual to be observed, but it is a life to be lived; for the Master gave as his unerring test of discipleship, "By their fruits ye shall know them." The reply of Jesus to the inquiry of John the Baptist regarding his messiahship is correlative and indicates that he applied the same test to himself that he did to his followers: "Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them." Furthermore, the Master said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."
The irrefutable logic of Christian Science is based on the Bible teaching that God, good, is Spirit, and is omnipresent and omnipotent Truth. (This is also stated in the Westminster Catechism.) From this Scriptural premise Christian Science classifies evil of every sort as negative, untrue, impotent, and supports the logic of words with the argument of works by healing the sick, freeing men from debasing, sinful habits, comforting the sorrowing, and bringing spiritual awakening and illumination to darkened humanity. Thus it is that Christian Science enables its adherents to wear, to a measurable and gratifying extent, the jewel of consistency, for Christian Science not only preaches the same precepts taught by Christ Jesus, but it also presents the proofs which he promised should attest Christian discipleship.
