[Written for the Sentinel]

The Christ Child

We think of him as a little child who came long, long ago,
To bring his thoughts of purity to heal a world of woe.
The wise men and the shepherds,—all who beheld his light,—
Came from afar, to where the star had led them through the night.

Ah, but the Christ eternal through ages past had been
Ready to heal receptive hearts of thoughts of death and sin;
God's truth, forever shining through mists of mortal mind
Has ever been on this dark earth ready for men to find.

The Christ-child thought of Jesus was needed then as now,
To make men meek and humble, to teach them how to bow
Their heads in adoration to God, whose love, expressed
In purity and service, in him was manifest.

Our gifts of love and gratitude we give to Truth to-day,
Our praise to Him whose Christ we know has been with us alway.
Our lives in loving service we consecrate anew,
In memory of Jesus, who came His work to do.
