Nine years' study of the teachings of Christian Science...
Nine year's study of the teachings of Christian Science has wrought such changes in my life that I find it difficult to reconcile the man that I knew as myself before taking up this study, with the man who fills that place in my thought at the present time. The first man was a confirmed dyspeptic, was suffering from chronic bowel trouble for which he had taken medicine more than twenty years, sick headaches which appeared about every three weeks, and bad colds, often accompanied by severe attacks of neuralgia lasting several days and making sleep impossible without the use of opiates. He was a constant user of tobacco and liquor, was extremely nervous, and had worn glasses more than ten years, it having been impressed upon his mind that he would never be able to read or do any kind of close work without them. Pills, powders, and tablets formed a very important part of his daily diet.
This man has been regenerated. The man that I recognize as myself to-day has not employed a physician or taken a drop of medicine for nine years; has not used tobacco or liquor for eight years; has not worn glasses for five years, and was healed of dyspepsia, bowel trouble, sick headaches, predisposition to colds and extreme nervousness, during his first reading of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. I am extremely grateful for these healings, not alone because of my increased bodily comfort, but because I know them to be the physical manifestation of a better understanding of the Science and harmony of being—the allness of God, the perfectness of man, His image and likeness, and the nothingness of matter and its so-called laws.
Christian Science has taught me to love the Bible; it has given me a practical religion, rules for the conduct of life applicable to every day of every year. It has given me a better concept of what it means to have "no other gods," and to love one's neighbor as one's self. I am grateful for having lived in the age in which Christian Science cane to the world, when "he sent his word, and healed them."
