I first heard of Christian Science many years ago, but...
I first heard of Christian Science many years ago, but was unable to investigate it until the summer of 1915 when I went to live with Christian Scientists in London. I joined the Sunday school and began to study the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. Benefits were immediately experienced and within a month a great fear of air raids practically disappeared.
One day when running down a steep flight of stone steps I jumped from about five steps up, but fell, twisting my ankle underneath me. The pain was so acute when I got up that I fainted upon reaching the ground floor. Some friends helped me to a seat, however, and within five minutes I was all right with the exception of the ankle. By declaring the truth I was soon able to move with the aid of a stick, and the same afternoon stood in a queue for over half an hour with hardly any inconvenience. When I took off my boot at night the ankle swelled to nearly three times its normal size, but the next morning the swelling was gone and the day after that I was about as usual. At no time was there any discoloration, inflammation, or bruise.
When I came abroad in March, 1917, I was able to overcome fear of submarines, with the loving help of a practitioner. An attack of seasickness was quickly overcome and a wonderful sense of protection was with me during the voyage. Since then Christian Science has been such a help that I do not know what I should do without it. During two epidemics of Spanish influenza and a serious outbreak of dysentry I have remained perfectly well. Long hours of night and day duty without much sleep have been done without fatigue. Nowadays a minimum of sleep is sufficient, whereas formerly I considered nine or ten hours in bed to be essential.
