I wish to express my gratitude for the sustaining messages...
I wish to express my gratitude for the sustaining messages which come to us through our periodicals, and especially for those which have been given to us since our country was drawn into this world conflict. A few days after war was declared, our only son went to the nearest Officers' Training Camp and enlisted. After a few weeks he was admitted and went into training. At the time it seemed like a great sacrifice, for we were not awake to the seriousness of the situation, but day after day, week after week, and month after month, these wonderful messages kept coming to us through our periodicals—messages that seemed sent directly to us—until, as a fog melts before the bright rays of the sun, so the fog of self-pity was gradually swept from my vision and I saw how impossible it is to be a Christian Scientist and not be willing gladly to do our duty to our country. I was shown that "perfect love casteth out fear." As our son has been transferred from one state to another, each move taking him nearer the Atlantic Coast, I have been able to realize that peace "which passeth all understanding," and now upon the eve of his departure for France, I am able to rest in the blessed assurance given us by our Leader (Science and Health, p. 303), "Spiritual man is the image or idea of God, an idea which cannot be lost nor separated from its divine Principle."
I have been healed of many discordant conditions. For ten years after the birth of our son, hardly a day passed that I was free from headache and backache, but through the effort to live the truth of Christian Science, as taught in Science and Health, these have been entirely overcome. I have been healed of what is known as quinsy, of colds and severe coughs, and for many years Christian Science has been our only physician. Words are indeed inadequate to express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for pointing so plainly the way that Jesus trod.
Mrs. Mary Johnston Edinger, Sacramento, Cal.
