From the Press

[From an editorial in Haverhill (Mass.) Gazette]

War has wrought many tolerations and crumbled many prejudices. The appointment of a Christian Science chaplain for the navy is taken as a significant change in the attitude of the public toward the faith of the followers of Mrs. Eddy. As this action has followed the appointment of two members of the same religious order in the army, it is now considered that the barriers have been removed and that Christian Science will henceforth be upon a free footing in both army and navy.

For many years both the army and the navy have been closed to the attempts of newer denominations to gain recognition. Legislation was invoked to keep Christian Science out of the military service, and medical societies and medical practitioners maintained strong opposition to it. But this opposition has been worn away and the spirit of religious freedom has awakened to open the doors to all recognized creeds and cults.
