There is not a line in any of Mrs. Eddy's writings which in any manner denies God's word, a fact apparent to anyone who, with an open mind, reads any of her works, even though they might not be ready to agree with all of her conclusions. Christian Science honors God and God's word to a greater extent probably than does any other religion.
Christian Science teaches that the man formed of the dust of the ground by the Lord God Jehovah, as recorded in the second chapter of Genesis, is not the child of God, and for this teaching it has the absolute statement to that effect in the Bible itself. In Romans 9:8 we read, "They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God." Texts of like tenor occur all through the Scriptures and are undeniable proof of the truth of the Christian Science teaching. Neither does the Bible say that this dust man, mortal man, or flesh man, is the image and likeness of God. God is Spirit, and the image and likeness of Him must be spiritual and not material. The spiritual creation in the first chapter of Genesis, where man is made in the image and likeness of God, is finished, and the Bible declares that nothing shall be added to it nor anything taken from it.
Christian Scientists do not deny that disease has been healed and evil habits overcome in those who had little understanding of God and no knowledge of Christian Science. Such cases prove the claims of Christian Science that disease is mental, and the result in such cases is evidence that, whether the patient knew it or not, God, good, is supreme and the master of evil in all its forms. In the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 270), we read: "Mortals think wickedly; consequently they are wicked. They think sickly thoughts, and so become sick. ... If a sense of disease produces suffering and a sense of ease antidotes suffering, disease is mental, not material. Hence the fact that the human mind alone suffers, is sick, and that the divine Mind alone heals." The Bible is authority for the statement that as a man "thinketh in his heart, so is he."
