I became interested in Christian Science a few years ago
I became interested in Christian Science a few years ago. At that time I was suffering from loss of speech. For about eight years I had been unable to talk above a strained, husky whisper, and even that was a great effort for me. Material remedies had been tried without avail and throat specialists told me I could not be helped, as part of the vocal chords were destroyed and there was a condition of partial paralysis. After a few weeks of desultory study of Christian Science I took my first treatment from a practitioner, and even though no immediate improvement in my voice was noticeable, I knew I had found the "pearl of great price." The change in my disposition was felt and remarked on by my family,—I became more affectionate and kindly. The next result was freedom from the liquor habit and all that goes with it. I had been a slave to liquor for years and occasionally resorted to a drug, as I was despondent, owing to my physical condition, and was growing worse. The desire for stimulants was gone from the first treatment. As a professional musician I find that my ability is increased and I am able to obtain more pleasant and profitable engagements.
The complete healing of my throat seemed slow, but in a little over a year my voice was normal. The slow healing, however, made it necessary for me to study faithfully, and thus I gained in understanding of this glorious truth, whereas I might have dropped it had I been quickly healed, for I had never read a whole chapter from the Bible in my life before. Now the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," together with the authorized Christian Science literature, are my constant companions on the road, where we need such loving friends. No words can express my gratitude to and for that God-inspired woman, Mrs. Eddy, and to all the friends that have helped me to realize my wonderful heritage as a child of God. I will try to be faithful until I am come to the complete realization that "now are we the sons of God."
