I am very grateful for the great help that Christian Science has been to me on the battlefield. I have been many times comforted when in danger, and have experienced the peace that passeth understanding. Often when the shells were bursting around and the majority of men were fearful, I have felt calm and confident and safe in divine protection. During many of the long route marches, I have been strengthened and encouraged by the knowledge that man is spiritual and not material, and cannot therefore suffer from fatigue or any depressing material condition. On one occasion when we started out we had not gone very far when a sense of fatigue and weariness came over me, and I felt that I should have to drop out, but I immediately set to work to know the truth as taught in Christian Science and almost at once I was strengthened. I was able to keep up to the end of the journey and arrived feeling fresh and well. Anyone who knows what a long route march means to the infantry, will understand what a boon and blessing Christian Science has been to me.

I have been able to use my knowledge of Christian Science in producing harmonious conditions when out resting in billets. During the very severe winter in the early part of 1917, I was guided through this knowledge to quite cozy quarters. I was, according to the doctors, very seriously wounded in the head, and constant inquiry was made if I experienced any pain or inconvenience from this wound. Although I was wounded in a number of other places, including two deep flesh wounds, no mention was made of these. My curiosity was aroused by the fact that I did not experience any pain or inconvenience from the head, so wrote home to the practitioner who had been giving me a helping thought, to ask if he had helped me at that time. I received a reply in which he said that one day he received a strong impulse to give me extra help, as he felt that I was in need of it. This occurred at the time I was wounded and I have no doubt that it was the means of saving my life. It has been a proof to me that even a distance of sixteen thousand miles is no obstacle to the immediate operation of divine Love.

I have had to meet the opposition and hostility of young fellows who so often "mark" anyone who does not join them in their worldly pleasures. On one occasion, while on our way home on the transport, I was left out in the cold, so to speak; no one seemed to want to speak to me, and when asked to pass anything to me would do so in a far from pleasant manner. I felt hurt at this for the time, but decided that some mental work was necessary, so I set about to know the truth and to declare it. I worked on this problem before retiring for the night, and early next morning when I went to breakfast I was greeted on all sides in a bright and pleasant manner. I hardly expected such a complete change as this, and felt deeply grateful for such a beautiful experience.
