The only right way of "considering" Christian Science,...
Boone (Iowa) News-Republican
The only right way of "considering" Christian Science, "whether philosophically" or "religiously," is to put it to the test. This means to apply it honestly and understandingly to some human problem; for Christian Science is the Science of Christianity. Just as a law of mathematics can be unerringly applied to a mathematical problem, so can the law of God be applied to every human need. If the mathematical law has been demonstrated to be law by the solution of any problem, we no longer doubt the law, and if we fail to solve a given problem we know that we have failed to apply the law understandingly,—we need to know more about mathematics. If we fail to work out life's problems, we need a fuller and more scientific knowledge of God.
If our lives are filled with discord, if we are the servants of sin and disease, what we need is the right understanding of "the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" to set us "free from the law of sin and death." This is the teaching of Christian Science. It is both scientific and Christian to find in God "our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." The religious and the philosophical side are one and the same in Christian Science. No amount of "humor" and of so-called "serious argument" can alter the fact that a religion which is identical with that of Jesus the Christ, as Christian Science is, must be both scientific and Christian. One cannot argue that two times two makes four, neither can we argue any other truth, for truth is a matter of demonstration.
