"Freedom to worship God"
In our thanksgiving let us not forget the Pilgrim Fathers, who initiated this idea of having a Thanksgiving Day. Not as refugees did they who founded freedom in a new land come to its shores. Mrs. Hemans, in her wonderful poem, depicts the courage and confidence which animated them when they made their exodus and voyage and landfall:—
Not as the flying come,
In silence and in fear;—
They shook the depth of the desert gloom
With their hymns of lofty cheer.
