The Norton (Kan.) Champion
I quite agree with a correspondent that "every material element is at war with all others that cross its path," and it is from these warring elements of materiality that mankind is seeking salvation. Paul recognized this disturbed and unnatural condition when he said: "For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ... we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body." Christian Science in its fulfillment of Jesus' prophecy relating to the spirit of Truth, offers the way of redemption; its teachings make known the divine Principle and rule which when understandingly applied rightly adjusts every element of human existence.
Because Christian Science declares and demonstrates the absolute truth of existence, its teachings do not admit of an unwillingness to take notice of the claims of sin, disease, and inharmony. Christian Science recognizes these conditions as not coming from, nor being in accord with, the one and perfect cause; hence, their claim of existence is suppositional. They possess no basis, substance, intelligence, nor law; therefore it cannot by any stretch of the imagination be correct to say that they have a real existence.
Again I concur with the correspondent "that it is a waste of time to attempt to prove that Jesus was God," since he himself declared that he was the "Son of God." It is quite true that the works of Jesus were wonderful; they were out of the ordinary course of things and did deviate far from the known law of the physical world, and by reason of this they were called miracles by those who had no knowledge of the operation of God's law. But to Jesus his work was divinely natural, as he possessed that knowledge of the Christ which is to free the world from the bondage of materialism. The infinite Truth which Jesus knew, his understanding of God and His relation to what He has created, could not be confined to one individual consciousness; thus Jesus said of those who should believe on him,—that is, understand him,—"The works that I do shall he do also." The teachings of Christian Science translate this infinite Truth of being to mortals; hence the faith, and fasting of human belief is transformed into divine knowledge, wherefore Christian Scientists affirm as did Christ Jesus, "I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things."
