"My thoughts"

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.—Isaiah.

My thoughts are not as Thine; but I would fain
So cleanse my mortal sense with sense divine,
So strive to wash away the worldly stain
Of earth's contagion, that this heart of mine
May seem a temple meet, a fane, a shrine,
A cloister pure for Thine all-cleansing Spirit
There to abide; so may Thy flame refine
My fitful thoughts until at length they merit
A sinless heritage, such as Thy saints inherit.

Arise, my thought! Arise on loftier wings
Toward the eternal dome of heavenly blue,
As mounts the soaring lark, and soaring sings
Of life so innocent and love so true,
That all who hear give heed, and praise anew
The Lord of heavenly song: so may my lays
Cast out the canker that would fain imbrue
With tears and blood the burden of these days;
So may a thought from heaven illume our darkling ways.
