For the benefit of those who doubt the efficacy of absent...
For the benefit of those who doubt the efficacy of absent treatment I would like to relate an experience I had in 1910. In the latter part of July, on the hottest day we had that summer, I became very ill suddenly at noontime, having a hemorrhage which continued a half hour. I felt that I could not live many more minutes, so asked my mother to telephone for a Christian Science practitioner—not to get help for myself, because I did not expect to live until my mother reached the place from which she could telephone, but in order that the practitioner might comfort her. About ten or fifteen minutes after she left the house I felt very much better and regretted having asked anyone to go out on such a hot day. An hour later, when the practitioner arrived, he said that as soon as he left the telephone he sat down and gave me a treatment. I knew then why I had felt so much better in such a short time. Mrs. Eddy asks, "Felt ye the power of the Word?" (Poems, p. 75.) This was what I had felt, and I had been snatched from the edge of the grave. Just a year afterwards I had exactly the same kind of experience. My first thought was to ask for help, but then I said, "No, I know that God is my life, and if I cannot prove it, I am satisfied to pass on." While thinking in this way I fell asleep, and when I awoke a half hour later was much better. My healing this time was slow.
My first healing in Christian Science was that of liver trouble of ten years' standing, which disappeared through reading Science and Health. The second healing was that of acute lung trouble. This was accomplished through one absent treatment. When I became interested in Christian Science my mother was healed, in five treatments, of rheumatism from which she had suffered twenty-seven years. Three years later she was healed of acute lung trouble after three weeks' treatment.
Christian Science has been my only physician for the past fifteen years and I feel that I can never be grateful enough for the many blessings I have received. My heart is filled with thankfulness to God for our Leader, Mrs. Eddy.
