Extracts from Letters
"I have been interested in Christian Science for over ten years and a casual reader of the Monitor almost since the day it was founded. When I was a student at Princeton University I found the editorial page of great assistance to me in my college work and the Home Forum page a splendid spiritual and moral guide; but I passed over the remainder of the paper, thinking that I could get the news earlier from the New York dailies.
"It was not until I joined the service that I discovered that every page of this great international daily contained something of value to me. Of course, I grew more interested in reading the war news, particularly at the time of the German drive last spring. I was then located at one of the large naval training stations, where I could secure a New York daily newspaper every morning, but the war news seemed so jumbled up and unsatisfactory. Each week-end when I was given leave to go home I hastened to purchase a Monitor as soon as I reached the city, and when I returned to my training station Sunday afternoon there was Saturday's Monitor, which had been passed around by some kind committee. Herein I not only found a satisfactory summary of the war news from the front, with a map to guide, but I began to read all of the international and national events related on the various pages. When I was at home awaiting assignment to a ship I purchased the Monitor every day.
"When I came aboard this ship my first watch in port was from four to eight in the morning. I found the quartermaster and messenger, who were on duty with me, reading a Monitor which had been placed on the desk of the officer of the deck by the Christian Science War Relief and Camp Welfare committee. I cannot get the Monitor every day now, but am reading from cover to cover a copy which I found had been placed in my stateroom by the above-mentioned committee almost a month ago.
