Outlines of sermons by a denominational clergyman on the...
Vashon Island (Wash.) Record
Outlines of sermons by a denominational clergyman on the "Mistakes of Christian Science" have been appearing now for several weeks. Such a title appears as incongruous to the Christian Scientist as the caption "Mistakes of Mathematics" would appear to most men. One who has never put to test the principle of numbers would be well qualified to speak on the mistakes of arithmetic. On the other hand, the person who has applied the science of numbers to problems in arithmetic and has proved that three times three always make nint, thereby solving his problem correctly, would teach or speak on the exactness of numbers. It is very evident from the printed outlines that our ministerial brother has neither perceived nor applied the rules of Christian Science to his own problems, which, following the above analogy, therefore qualifies him to speak on its mistakes. Dealing with the subject from his viewpoint, which is that of the outsider, and frankly materialistic, it is clear to Christian Scientists why he reaches the conclusions that he does.
Christian Science is not a religion of profession only, but a religion of demonstration, and its adherents are true followers of it in the proportion that they demonstrate its truths, which are the truths that Jesus applied and proved in his ministry on earth. In her writings Mrs. Eddy repeatedly enjoins on her followers the necessity of practice as well as profession, and says on page 37 of Science and Health, "When will Jesus' professed followers learn to emulate him in all his ways and to imitate his mighty works? ... Hear these imperative commands: 'Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect!' 'Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature!' 'Heal the sick!'" The wonderful thing is that Christian Scientists are accomplishing the very things which Jesus enjoins, having recognized the necessity of complying with his commands through the application of the scientific rule of healing discovered by Mrs. Eddy. The sick and the sinning are being healed every day through the ministrations of this Science, and the world is better because of its presence. It holds out to all who now or in the future accept and practise its teachings, that peace which Christ Jesus said he was leaving with his followers.
