About seven years ago I was very weak, emaciated, and distressed concerning my physical condition. Three of our best physicians diagnosed my case, and each one said I had pellagra. In my mind this disease and the grave were inseparable, as every case that had come under my onservation had terminated in that way. The last physician I had said that meal was the cause of the disease, and under no circumstances was I to eat any more of it; also I must remain in bed until after the lunch hour every day.

At this time my brother gave me a copy of Science and Health, and said he had heard that its study would heal disease. Although in times past I had thought what queer people the Scientists must be to believe that Christ was still healing disease, the book was gladly received and studied, for I was willing to do anything if I could understand what to do. The mornings were spent in this way, with the result that a great many errors in myself were uncovered. When I really had made the demonstration of overcoming these errors, I felt that I was well, and did not remain in bed any more; but I had to wait till spring to prove that I was healed, as my physician had said the disease would return at that time. No symptom has ever returned, however, and after hate, fear, and grief were destroyed, the meal which was said to have caused the disease proved harmless.
