Santa Ana (Cal.) Register
At a meeting of a certain club devoted to educational themes the interesting subject of "Multiple Personality" was discussed. During the evening two members took occasion to make insinuations against and attacks upon Christian Science, its Founder, and its followers. The writer, although not a Christian Scientist, ventures to register objection to this sort of practice. Without intent dogmatically to defend an institution whose creed has received but comparatively superficial personal investigation, the writer is constrained to admit the appeal of its dominating spiritual ideals and to acknowledge certain personal experience and acquaintance with remarkable physical, moral, and spiritual benefits undoubtedly resultant from an understanding and adoption of these ideals.
Furthermore, the writer believes that the subject of personality, single, dual, or multiple, has received greater elucidation in a single page of Mrs. Eddy's writings than by nineteen centuries of erudite discussion by intellectual clubs. She has written Person with a capital, just as she has written Spirit, Mind, Love, Truth, thus intimating the spiritual concept and divine unity of these. She has contended for the one Mind, the divine personality that was in Christ Jesus—the kingdom not divided against itself. For the representation to the world of such a magnificent concept increasing thousands are calling her name blessed, and in measure as they adopt the Christ-idea, the God-personality, good, Truth, God, or whatever term one may prefer, they are experiencing the fruits of the Spirit even unto its mysterious reactions in bodily health.
The conflict between the several personalities of the subjects chosen for illustration at this club meeting offers very clear analogy to the conflict in humanity itself. As discord in these subjects was inevitable so long as their pseudo-personalities existed, so will discord in humanity be inevitable until personality in its loftiest, truest conception shall reign supreme. What is true of the small unit, the individual, is true of that larger one, the nation, and of the whole, namely, humanity itself.
