It is with sincere gratitude for the many blessings received from Christian Science that I send this testimony. I had always tried to lead a consistent Christian life, but when great troubles came I found little comfort in my religion. When the only friend who, as I then thought, could help me, passed on, I felt that God was indeed unjust and unmerciful. I ceased to pray or to read the Bible, for my prayers were not answered, and I could not worship a God who I believed was treating me so cruelly.

Finally, in January, 1914, my health gave way. An attack of influenza was followed by much pain and weakness, and a complete breakdown. I lost all interest in my surroundings, and only wished to die and get away from it all. After spending two months in bed I was able just to get about the house, and occasionally walk a short distance with help, but always in great pain.

In February, 1915, I remarked to a Scientist friend that I should never be well again. When she replied, "You could be well," I did not believe her, but I eagerly read some copies of the Sentinel which she sent me. Soon afterward she loaned me a copy of Science and Health. I read it through once, but although interested, I felt that I could not understand the book, and laid it aside. Soon I felt impelled to read it again, and one Sunday morning as I was thinking over what I had read, also the ninety-first psalm, which my friend had pointed out to me, like a flash of sunlight I realized that it was the truth.
