[Written for the Sentinel]

Hope

Hope is not building castles in the air,
Nor wishing that a something may come true,
Nor turning from the blackness of despair
With empty heart to gaze at heaven's blue.

Much higher is the knowledge that is ours
Who read aright the lesson of the past,—
That all the vaunted claims of evil's powers
To Truth omnipotent must yield at last.
