The Express
In reply to a letter in The Express permit me to state that mortals indulge in evil because they are victims of the general belief that evil has the intelligence and attractiveness of good; but Christian Science is teaching that the one and only cause is God, or good, and that good is therefore infinite. Hence the influence of evil in the lives of mortals and their desire to indulge in it diminishes in the proportion that the spiritual fact is understood.
On page 102 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes: "Mankind must learn that evil is not power. Its so-called despotism is but a phase of nothingness. Christian Science despoils the kingdom of evil, and preeminently promotes affection and virtue in families and therefore in the community." Christian Science would not wait for evil to manifest itself in sinful acts as a means of warning mortals against sin, but would forestall sin by teaching mortals to meet and master the evil thoughts or suggestions that are the forerunners of sinful acts.
