In reply to the criticism of an evangelist permit me to...

Gloversville (N. Y.) Herald

In reply to the criticism of an evangelist permit me to state: It is true that those who get an understanding of Christian Science lose the desire to pray as they once prayed, if they prayed at all, but they by no means lose the desire to pray. According to the old order, believers are taught to plead with God for blessings, while Christian Scientists are taught that God has already provided all good for them, and that all mankind need do, therefore, is to wake up and realize His all-power and ever-presence.

"God is Love," Mrs. Eddy writes on page 2 of Science and Health. "Can we ask Him to be more?" she continues. "God is intelligence. Can we inform the infinite Mind of anything He does nor already comprehend? Do we expect to change perfection? Shall we plead for more at the open fount, which is pouring forth more than we accept?. ... Asking God to be God is a vain repetition. God is 'the same yesterday, and today, and forever;' and He who is immutably right will do right without being reminded of His province."

It is true also that those who get an understanding of Christian Science surrender the common belief that the crucifixion of Jesus in any way relieves them of the responsibility of working out their own salvation. Jesus was the Way-shower. We follow him only to the extent that we profit by the example he left us, and overcome error in our own lives. "His true flesh and blood were his Life," Mrs. Eddy writes on page 25 of Science and Health; "and they truly eat his flesh and drink his blood, who partake of that divine Life."
