From Our Exchanges

[The Christian Work]

We have now come to a great crisis in the world's history—it may be a second era after two thousand years of Christian preaching and teaching. Certain it is that we are coming to a fresh and enlarged conception of the gospel of Jesus. His moral and ethical teaching in the beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount have a significance and a grip on the minds and consciences of men as never before. We admit the oriental imagery, but his sayings embody the second commandment of loving our neighbor as ourselves, and always turning the other cheek of kindness, no matter how many times we may have been smitten. We are to understand his command to resist not evil as literal. There is no place in the heart of the real follower of Christ for malice, revenge, envy, or hatred—"love is the fulfilling of the law." And what he says about hearing these sayings and doing them is literal truth which we must all face.
