From Our Exchanges

[The Pacific Baptist]

Religion in its essence is eternal. Our conception of it suffers change. Its onward movements mark the growth of thought, and fashion into symmetry and strength the character of nations, as of men. Its retrogressions are the heralds of decay, telling of coming darkness, beneath whose blight all virtues die and in which vice and error thrive. In all the ebb and flow there has been, on the whole, a forward movement. The old fancies have vanished and been forgotten. The new thoughts have graven themselves deeply upon the consciousness of men, and wrought changes of the utmost importance to the world.
