A little over two years ago I was a most miserable and disheartened creature. For ten years I had suffered terribly from stomach and bowel trouble, and though I had undergone an operation there was little change. Then my eyes became so badly affected that the regular prescribed glasses gave no relief and I wore black glasses almost constantly. Three specialists were attending me at this time and my case was diagnosed as distended stomach; in fact, all the internal organs were said to be far below normal position and I wore various kinds of supports, besides spending many hours each day in a reclining position.
I had often heard of Christian Science, but not really understanding it, had thought it mere superstition and felt an intense antagonism toward it. Religion had always been one of my deepest interests in life, and though I had this awful sense of hatred toward Christian Science, there were many times when I rebelled at the thought that it was the will of God for me to suffer so and to be so utterly helpless and useless in life. One day in June, 1914, I was so desperate I spent most of the day in prayer that if there was any way out I would be shown so I could follow it, for I could not face the rest of my life in this condition.
That very evening we called on a dear friend, who had been ill, and were much astonished to hear of his healing through Christian Science. At once my old antagonism arose, but this friend explained that God is the only healer and that Christian Science simply explains the divine laws by which man is brought into health, and harmony with God. This seemed very reasonable and logical to me, and was so different from what I had judged Christian Science to be. Then suddenly an awakening came to me. It dawned upon me that perhaps this was the answer to my prayer, and I determined to investigate Christian Science thoroughly for a month at least, to see if it could possibly be the truth. I began immediately to study Science and Health and received several treatments.
