[Written for the Sentinel]

Truth's Voice

It seemed to me, in childhood's days,
I heard a gentle voice
Which helped to lighten all my ways
And make my heart rejoice.

Then, as I grew to manhood's state,
New voices seemed to come;
And oft they told of bitter fate,
Which would all joy denumb.

But over all, so sweet and clear,
I heard one voice anew,
That sang, and rang, so clear, so near, —
My falt'ring hope made new.

It held the songs of all the world,
And sang them in my heart,
And when I listened to Truth's voice
In Love I had my part.
