Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science,...

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" says that in order to advance in the understanding of Christian Science teaching one must "study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit" (p. 495). If our critic were a little closer to Christian Science and Christian Scientists, he would not make the statements reported in another publication in Spencer: "He declared that the teachings of Christian Science were not only contrary to the true interpretation of the Bible, but an insult to human intelligence." The latter part of this statement is completely refuted by the testimony of thousands of the world's best citizens who have embraced Christian Science teaching and are practicing it in their lives daily. The first part of the statement evidences nothing but prejudiced opinion.

The Bible itself gives the test whereby we may determine whether or not Christian Science correctly interprets the Word, and indeed we find this test in the words of the Master, "By their fruits ye shall know them." The last chapter of Mark records the Master's command to preach the gospel, and it tells the signs that shall follow true preaching, and all Bible students know that healing the sick is one of these signs. In spite of the fact that the revivalist so unmercifully berated the followers of Mrs. Eddy, he makes no effort to obey the Master's command to heal the sick, while Christian Science gives indisputable, incontrovertible evidence that it is reclaiming thousands upon thousands from vice and sin, and healing all manner of sickness and disease.

Christian Science practitioners have not healed all who have appealed to them, and do not claim to have done so. Neither did the disciples who were intimately associated with Jesus heal disease unfailingly; but the great Teacher showed the way and he healed unfailingly. The large measure of success that has attended Christian Science ministry proves that the promise, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also," will ultimately be fulfilled in those who strive sincerely and understandingly to follow the great Wayshower, Christ Jesus; and Christian Scientists believe this large measure of success also proves beyond dispute that the works of Mrs. Eddy enable mankind to find the way.
