An awakening of my spiritual understanding to the wonderful...

An awakening of my spiritual understanding to the wonderful power and love of God came to me with a force that was irresistible. Prior to March, 1916, I was engaged in a business which kept me away from home during the week, except on Sundays, but my wife had procured a copy of Science and Health, and she asked me to take it along with me to read. I promised to do so, but as the only chapter which impressed me even a little was the one on Prayer, I gave up reading the book. Later I again tried to read it, but only to lay it aside.

About two weeks after that I had a severe attack of influenza, so went to a specialist on the nose and throat, who treated me about two weeks. As I was no better I did not know what to do. My wife then advised me to see a Christian Science practitioner, and at last I consented. When I went to his office I did nothing but ask questions, which he answered. I began to feel better, and in five treatments was cured. This experience so impressed me that I once more began to read Science and Health, and this time understood it much better.

Shortly after this my wife was suddenly stricken with apoplexy as she was coming downstairs. I heard her fall, and with assistance took her into our rooms. Some ladies in the house aided her, and one of them without my consent called a doctor, who made an examination but found no bones broken. He said the attack was due to nervousness, then wrote a prescription which the lady had filled; but I would not consent to my wife taking the medicine. She went to sleep, and the next morning got up as usual. I was already up and dressed, and a lady who had come in the night before to assist was in the room, when suddenly she called to me that my wife was going to fall, and I sprang up just in time to catch her.
