The author of an article relating to Christian Science, after quoting the signs which Christ Jesus said should evidence the understanding of his teaching (see Mark xvi. 17, 18), continued as follows: "I am curious to know why Mrs. Eddy and others have selected the fifth of the above named signs to the exclusion of the other four."

In reply to this query I would say that Mrs. Eddy accepted all of the verses in question and that she did not exclude any part of them. They read as follows: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."

It is to be observed that four of the signs here specified are within the scope of Christian Science healing, for it includes moral as well as physical discord, and prevention as well as cure. Even the promise, "They shall speak with new tongues," has its fulfilment in Christian Science, for this teaching interprets to human understanding everything that relates to human welfare. The following quotation from page 248 of Mrs. Eddy's "Miscellaneous Writings" will serve by way of illustration: "The literal meaning of the passage 'lay hands on the sick' would be manipulation; its moral meaning, found in the 'new tongue,' is spiritual power—as, in another Scripture, 'I will triumph in the works of Thy hands.'"
