The Lectures
A large audience gathered in the edifice of First Church of Christ, Scientist, to listen to the lecture given by John W. Doorly. Judge Frederick C. Hill of Clinton introduced the speaker, and in the course of his remarks said:—
In the Declaration of Independence we find these statements: "That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Christian Science affirms the truth regarding these enumerated rights, and adds thereto health and holiness as the legitimate inheritance of every man, woman, and child. Jesus said of his followers, in the parable to the Pharisees, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly;" and Paul declared, "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." Viewed in the light of these utterances, is it not logical to conclude that the enjoyment of man's "unalienable rights" is not dependent upon the phenomenon of material existence, but is experienced through the knowledge and understanding of the "law of the Spirit of life," which makes mankind free from the "law of sin and death"?
It was this exalted view of Truth that enabled Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, fearlessly to declare, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter;" also, "Life has no partnership with death" (Science and Health, pp. 468, 243). The carnal mind, content with its conceptions of life, liberty, and happiness, has had little or no concern regarding the real and eternal. Some time, however, the awakening will come; some time humanity will be universally redeemed by Truth. Then the world will experience the full fruition of man's "unalienable rights," and will bow in grateful acknowledgment before Christian Science as the sign of Immanuel, "God with us."—The Pantagraph.
