[Written for the Sentinel]

"The mighty God"

Can we essay to circumscribe the Mind,
Creative source of all that is, and was,
And is to be? Searching, we cannot find
Its breadth, depth, height. Infinity
Knows none of these; for broader than the sea,
And higher than the stars that gleam by night,
God's purpose dawns on sight
Clear, steadfast, glorified, in His own might
Upris'n, to glimpse creation in its cause.

Sheltering beside the brooklet in the dell
The humble violet lifts her tender face,
Clothed in a majesty no words can tell,
Gained from th' eternal Mind where all is well.
The radiant stars declare their glory bright
Is but reflection of a borrowed light.
The living sunbeams gladly quote the same,
And myriad dewdrops with one voice acclaim
The wisdom, power, and love outspanning space.
