In one issue of your paper was an article enumerating the medical graduates for the last three years, according to statistics from the Journal of the American Medical Association, and showing the steady decrease as compared with previous years. That the writer of the article attributed this decrease to the widespread influence and teachings of Christian Science is indicated by the title, "Progress of Christian Science."
That there is a growing sentiment against the use of drugs is evident to all, and this because it has been proved conclusively that drugs do not heal, that at best their effect is only palliative, not curative. While the physicians have been for centuries dealing with results as manifested in diseased bodily conditions, Christian Science deals with causation, which is found to be mental—in a word, wrong thinking, such as fear, worry, anxiety, and other undesirable mental qualities. Thoreau has said, "There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil, to one who is striking at the root."
The many cases pronounced incurable by our best physicians and afterward healed in Christian Science have proved its efficacy, and this accounts for its wonderful growth. The Bible teaches that it is God who healeth all our diseases. The Great Master, Christ Jesus, healed without drugs, and taught his disciples to do likewise. According to history the early Christians for about three centuries after the resurrection were healers, and this through spiritual means alone.
