A few years ago, having experienced severe reverses, upon the recommendation of a friend I sought the advice of a Christian Science practitioner, who showed much kindness in explaining things to me. I derived so much comfort from what I heard that I was enabled, while facing the crucial moment, to grasp the oars of my life-boat with a strong sense of courage and trust, and to steer it alone thereafter. From then on I became an eager reader of Der Herold der Christian Science, and later of the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I also attended the Christian Science services, where through the beautiful Lesson-Sermons the way from sense to Soul was made clear.
While I believed myself to be religiously inclined, I felt God's nearness only when alone on the mountain tops or in the deep woods; when back in town amidst the misery which I had to see all around me, I would often put an interrogation mark after the word God. I failed to understand that all this should be His will. On several occasions I made an attempt to read the Bible, but found in it much that seemed contradictory; besides, to my sense it was all so incomprehensible and incoherent that I laid it aside feeling quite vexed. However, after hearing the interpretation of the Bible through the Lesson-Sermon at the Sunday services, it became illumined. My interest was aroused, and I took up the study of Christian Science in earnest.
I went through a hard struggle with error of all kinds, but through the gradual realization of the ever-presence and omnipotence of divine Love, and as the meaning of divine Principle unfolded to me, I was enabled to overcome error. I now feel like a new being, both physically and mentally. I used to be ailing constantly, but now am in good health and able to perform all the duties incumbent upon me. Divine Love through Christian Science has helped me greatly in every way, and I am profoundly grateful to God. My daily prayer is that all men may be led to find the way of Truth. I also think of our beloved Leader with a sense of gratitude and love for the great work which she has accomplished in bringing again to light the simple, life-giving gospel of Christ Jesus in its fulness.
