I desire to express my gratitude for the many blessings...
I desire to express my gratitude for the many blessings received by me and mine through the study and application of Christian Science. After suffering from rapidly failing health and great physical weakness for over a year, in December, 1912, I collapsed completely and became seriously ill. A doctor was called in, but for many weeks I suffered dreadfully and for six weeks was confined to bed with what was pronounced a malignant growth. I was also afflicted with sleeplessness, nervousness, physical weakness, and a stomach disorder for which I dieted until little food was allowed other than bread and milk, but I became steadily worse. Heart weakness too seemed very real to me, and fear became so intense that several times I nearly passed on.
In March, 1913, the attending physician called in a surgeon for consultation, with a view to removing the growth by an operation. On examination, however, the doctors decided that an operation would prove fatal, and very feelingly they broke this news to me, at the same time pronouncing me incurable. Thus when a few days afterward some Christian Science literature was sent to me by Christian Scientists whom I did not then know but who had heard of my need, a dark cloud of despair hung over my home. I knew nothing of Christian Science up to this time; it had been simply a name to me, and so I read the literature without supposing that there was any power in the world to meet my great need. But I was soon to prove the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."
When a little later I was invited to the local Christian Science church I went, hoping to find some help but not thinking it possible to be cured. The sincerity and love I saw there, however, impressed me very much, and the note of gratitude in the testimonies filled me with hope. Yet it seemed all like a dream, a beautiful dream that might presently vanish; but I was soon to prove that it was real in all its beauty, and that the sense of suffering and sorrow was the dream. I asked for help from a practitioner, and it was lovingly given, with the result that in four days after taking up treatment I was enabled to resume my occupation, and in three weeks the malignant growth disappeared. The other discordant conditions were soon overcome and my normal weight returned. Since then Christian Science has met all my needs and those of my family. The past few years have been to me a time of overcoming, and the truth has healed and is healing me every day,—morally, mentally, and physically.
