The Lectures

Prof. Hermann S. Hering, who delivered a lecture on Christian Science at the Methodist Church, was introduced by Mrs. Maude C. Garretson, first reader of the local church, who said:—

We come to you tonight with the same message that nineteen centuries ago came to the "shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night," when the angel said, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy," — a message of health, hope, and happiness, of Life, Truth, and Love. We come declaring again the power of God to heal sickness as well as sin. This power is given each one of us in proportion to our understanding and application of spiritual law. We come not to proselyte, not to criticize, not to quarrel with others, but to listen to the message of Truth, to hear something of what Christian Science is and of what it does. This message is nearer its realization today than at any other time since these glorious words were uttered by the heavenly messengers hovering over the Judaean hills on the glad occasion of Jesus' birth: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."
