Providence (R. I.) Journal
In a recent issue of the Journal there appeared an article entitled, "The Medical Value of Pain." Owing to the fact that the writer of the article touches on the subject of Christian Science, I feel called upon to say just a word at this time. In the course of the article, after reference is made to various conditions and methods, the statement occurs that "undoubtedly some Christian Scientists, under the spell of religious zeal, are able to efface their sensations."
Inasmuch as the great body of Christian Scientists is made up of those who are credited with having at least a fair amount of intelligence and common sense, it is but natural that they should object to being referred to as under a "spell," or to the inference that their "zeal" is without knowledge. To be sure Christian Scientists are "zealous of good works," like the people of whom we read in Titus; but these good works are by no means obtained by any such ridiculous method as the attempt to ignore "sensations" or to efface them through any action of the human will or human mind. On the contrary, the Christian Scientist enters upon or takes up the seeming problem of pain or human discord with an assurance based on understanding; and this understanding is obtained only as he is "willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord," as St. Paul tells us in II Corinthians, and also in endeavoring to obtain that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," as we read in Philippians.
Christian Science is absolutely scientific, based upon a right premise, with every conclusion logically drawn. The healing work in Christian Science is not in any way associated with human effort, but is based on spiritual law, a law inapprehensible to the material thought but perfectly clear and plain to spiritual consciousness. And this spiritual consciousness, which it is so necessary to attain in order to apprehend this law, is gained only as one begins to catch a glimpse of what God really is,—Life, Love, Truth.
