In his sermon at the George Street Congregational Church...

In his sermon at the George Street Congregational Church the clergyman is reported as having referred to people who today are turning aside from Christianity and the church of Christ and embracing the "gratuitous irrelevancies of Christian Science." Those who have adopted Christian Science have done so because they have found therein Christianity in its original purity, healing the sick and reforming the sinner. On page 26 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes: "Our Master taught no mere theory, doctrine, or belief. It was the divine Principle of all real being which he taught and practised. His proof of Christianity was no form or system of religion and worship, but Christian Science, working out the harmony of Life and Love."

It is rather interesting in this connection to note that John the Baptist was in doubt whether Jesus was the Messiah or not, and so sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus if he were. They received this reply: "Go and show John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them." This answer signified the signs by which Jesus intended Christianity to be known for all time; therefore it is quite as necessary today that it should be proven with "signs following" as at any other time in the world's history; in fact, the need has become more apparent with the advance of so-called material knowledge. Any one who gains an understanding of Christian Science can to this extent prove for himself that its teaching is in absolute conformity with that of Jesus the Christ.
