Das Kleine Journal,

Since the article here following is a reply to an article which appeared in our columns, and since we wish to observe the rule of justice that one attacked should not be denied a word in his own defense (even though the attacked be "Christian Science"), we shall not refuse Fräulein Weber, publication committee for the Christian Science movement in Germany, a hearing. Our own point of view, however, remains unchanged by the acceptance of this article.—Editor Das Kleine Journal.

In Das Kleine Journal of Dec. 2 there appeared an article entitled "Hocus-pocus," referring to a sect in the east of Berlin claiming to heal the sick by means of magnetic influences said to be similar to the methods used for healing in Christian Science. I know nothing of this sect, but to judge from the article its tendencies have no similarity to those of Christian Science, whatever may have been said to the contrary in recent times. The prevailing notions about Christian Science may well be classified as "hocus-pocus," but this does not in any way connect them with Christian Science. They are illusions that exist only in the minds of those who hold them, and nowhere else.

The real life is conscious, spiritual activity. The sun never rotated around the earth and the earth never was flat. Spirits, witches, and sorcerers never existed, but for mankind they seemed to live as long as these false beliefs were held in thought. Slaves and bondmen never were necessities, but for millions of men this disgraceful condition was equal to a law of nature. And why? Because they believed in slavery as a necessity. Just as spirits, witches, sorcerers, were idols which existed only in human minds and nowhere else, so were slavery and bondage, and they had to be corrected there before they could disappear from experience. So it is with all things. The world, life, is for us as it appears to the consciousness of each, and this is why we all live in different worlds.
