There is nothing new in a local evangelist's recent attempt...

Beloit (Wis.) News

There is nothing new in a local evangelist's recent attempt to show that Christian Science is not in accordance with the Bible. Critics have been attempting to prove this for the past half century, and all the while those who are students of Mrs. Eddy's interpretation of the Scriptures are finding, in the degree that they are living in accordance therewith, that they are able to heal the sick and overcome sin of every name and nature. It is quite an easy matter to select from the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," sentences and clauses which separated from their context would make them appear contradictory to specially selected Scriptural quotations. It is just as easy a matter, by thus comparing one Scriptural quotation with another, to prove that the Bible itself is contradictory.

In trying to disprove Mrs. Eddy's statement that "Spirit, God, . . . never created matter" (Science and Health, p. 335), our critic cites the first verse of Genesis: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Here we have his inference that God, who is infinite Spirit, created matter. Mrs. Eddy interprets this verse to mean that the real heaven and the real earth are spiritual, and furthermore that all that God created is spiritual, like Himself, and He "saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." From the above premise she has never receded one iota. Upon this basic truth, "the stone which the builders rejected," a superstructure of good works has raised that is daily becoming better known throughout the world.

On page 358 of Science and Health it is well said: "Christian Science, understood, coincides with the Scriptures, and sustains logically and demonstratively every point it presents. Otherwise it would not be Science, and could not present its proofs. Christian Science is neither made up of contradictory aphorisms nor of the inventions of those who scoff at God. It presents the calm and clear verdict of Truth against error, uttered and illustrated by the prophets, by Jesus, by his apostles, as is recorded throughout the Scriptures." Mrs. Eddy's accumulation of a comfortable fortune is perfectly legitimate, and it is being used in a most praiseworthy manner,—that of furthering the cause of Christian Science and thus benefiting the world.
