The tenets of Christian Science, as given on page 497 of...
Guthrie (Okla.) Leader
The tenets of Christian Science, as given on page 497 of Science and Health, are founded on the demonstrable truths of the Scriptures. The first and second read as follows: "I. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our suffcient guide to eternal Life. 2. We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God's image and likeness."
Christian Scientists use Science and Health as a text-book, or "Key to the Scriptures," and not in any sense as a substitute for the New Testament. And why not, since the world recognizes the right of each individual to interpret the Scriptures in his own way? Our critic claims the right to explain the Scriptures in his way, and that is what Science and Health does for the Christian Scientist. Christian Scientists are lawabiding citizens. They are each one trying to emulate the life of the master Christian, Christ Jesus, as the last of these tenets explains: "And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure."
Christian Scientists have learned to trust God in every time of trouble, and their trust is not in vain. Every sincere seeker for Truth can prove for himself its beneflcent and healing effect. Jesus came to "give light to them that sit in darkness," and the understanding gained in Christian Science enables one to hold the light higher, for it is a practical, every-day religion that keeps self well out of sight, while it exalts the Christ as the healing and saving power. Mrs. Eddy's own words to the adherents of her teachings are, "Follow your Leader only so far as she follows Christ" (Message for 1901, p. 34).
