As a child I was never strong, but I finally succeeded in...
As a child I was never strong, but I finally succeeded in finishing school and was married. Then ensued attacks of sickness with partial relief, until in December, 1890, I went to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. After relating my woes very fully to the loving woman, she treated me, and then said decidedly: "Your blood is not your life. God is your life.' Finding I had ceased attending any church, she loaned me Science and Health and recommended that I study it and attend Christian Science services.
I took four weeks' treatment with no apparent relief, and stopped ; but with about six weeks' study, constantly holding in thought that God is our life, I rose one morning free, and was enabled to lay aside a body brace which I had worn for seven years. Thus was the statement proved, "Truth has a healing effect, even when not fully understood" (Science and Health, p. 152). The first three years in Science I saw few Scientists ; my days were fully occupied, and studying had to be done evenings. The first twelve years I did all my own Science work and some for my family. Since then I have had occasional help. I have not used any material remedies, my every need having been met in Christian Science.
It has been my privilege to see many proofs of God's love and care in my little family, especially with two cases of acute lung trouble, in one of which approaching death was overcome in a few hours. A member of my family was wounded in the Philippine Islands. The bullet passed through his body, coming out on his back. It was six weeks before he reached home, but in two weeks thereafter he was well enough to go to work. Inflammation of the bowels was overcome through Christian Science treatment and the patient was back at his desk in three weeks. A rusty nail wound and a severe wound from a needle have been healed. Many minor discords incident to a family have been overcome, and financial problems have been solved many times. The Bible is a new book, and the awakening to the spiritual creation has been grand. Pages could be written of benefits received and fears overcome, and each day brings added proofs.
